Opening Weekend: The New York/Missouri Report

INY 1 f you've checked in on the BBZ in the past few days, you've heard all about my tale of weather woes as it related to the opening weekend of New York's firearm's deer season. "Sucked" isn't too strong a word. At my hunting club in Sullivan County, New York (an area once renowned as one of the finest whitetail hunting hot spots in the country), our members managed two dink bucks, one doe and a bobcat.

NY 2 Deer sightings were awful. Blame it on the weather, the moon, the rut stage—whatever. It's got to get better. Here's a pic of one of our dink bucks and another of a small, yet-legal, buck lounging in one of our fields on Sunday afternoon.

MO 1 Meanwhile, in Missouri, my dear friend, Ray Eye, slammed a couple of solid bucks on his lease. Nice deer, Raymond. Way to go.

MO 2 More reports to follow.......—Gerry Bethge

Maybe if you didn't shoot the dink bucks you would shoot big bucks. But what do I know.

Hey Hick----Actually, you know a lot because you are precisely correct. Although I prefer to pass up young bucks, others do not which is their perogative.

That sure is one neat wheel cover, and nice rifled shot's to the youth team.

If you have to take a braggin size deer every season to be a succes then u might be in for a rude awakening.I spend about 50 days in the deer woods each year starting w bow hunting / rifle and BP.I hunt different types of terrain from open agriculte to mature woods and some of the thickest stuff imagineable,Ionly take big mature bucks/on an average about evry 4 years, yet i enjoy evry outing. ITS not the bucks but the hunt that counts.6phunter

I just took a nice deer with a bow/he'll never make anyone raise more than an eyebrow.the tracking job took 4 hours and nearly a mile thru woods/ cedar thickets and honeysuckle, my second best tracking job ever, just added him to my trophy list. It"s not always the size of the deer that makes the best memories.6phunter
