Breaking News: World Record Bass Caught
Could this be it? The new No. 1 for largemouth bass fishermen? Mike Winn is holding a 25.1-pound bass caught on Dixon Lake in southern California Monday by his friend Mac Weakley. By all accounts it smashes the standing record, but questions (as always) loom. Jed Dickerson, a bass fishing legend and friend of Weakley's, weighed the big 'un with a digital scale and then released it. Wildlife officials were not involved in the process. Also, reports that the fish had been foul hooked are circulating. What do you think? Will this bass claim the new title of biggest ever?
Ernie Cowan penned a story for the North County Times on the events yesterday. He's known Jed Dickerson and the other big bass hunters for years. We've got him working on an exclusive for the web, which should be up later today. For now, read his original story.
In the magazine, Bob McNally wrote about where the next record bass might be caught and mentioned Dixon Lake. Read the article, "Finding the Million-Dollar Baby" from our April 2005 issue.
But is it?

Good find Randall. So far the IGFA has not designated the Florida bass as a separate species in the record book. I wonder if that would be a good PR move, because then you have two world-record chases going on instead of one.

Mouth hooked and weighed (and witnessed) on a certified scale...period. This is the mother of all freshwater records and too important to compromise...especially since this fish allegedly shattered the record.
Dickerson knew the rules better than most given his past history. If he caught the fish legally (snagging a game fish IS illegal regardless of intent) and it broke the record, I'd be the first to cheer him on.
You have to have rules or there is no point to keeping records

Thats a good size bass, but the other day in a small pond in my small town of Winchester, MA, I ended up catching a 26.7 pound bass. I have been hunting it for years sence i was twelve years old. I was never able to get it in without breaking the line. When i hooked it, it took 2 and a half hours to rail and work in. With my Yum, watermelon color worm I was able to catch the Beast. You can e-mail me or call me with any question and for any pictures call me at 339-927-5138.

I say congrats on a nice hog. As rules are set for a reason, this is unfortunately not a new World Record. I see the integrity that Mac has by stating the foul hook, and I am sure he will be fine with the decision. In the record books or not it is the experience that is worth the most. Fish On!
