Early March Gobbling Report
Well, we're cruising on into the spring season. Guns continue to boom across Florida and Hawaii while hunters prepare to hit the woods in a host of other states across the Southeast later this week. Here's a look at what some of them are seeing out there.
Brandon McElwain, in McLean County, Ky., went scouting yesterday and heard 4 different gobblers sounding off in the morning. Later that day, he spotted a huge mixed flock of more than 60 birds that included 9 or 10 toms, one of which went into strut and stayed there for a solid half hour.
Meanwhile, Michele Elliot, an NWTF Chapter President on the Eastern Shore of Maryland says things are still somewhat quiet and turkeys are still gathered together in their usual preseason groups.
In Missouri, turkey hunting extraordinaire Ray Eye says the turkeys are busy doing their thing. He says, "Turks are strutting in fields, doing their pecking order thing." He has heard light to moderate gobbling in the central part of the state as well as in the Ozarks. He's already spotted a few fighting for dominance in a bid to set the pecking order.
In California, Joe, also known as TRKYHTR on the NWTF message board wrote, "I tooks pics two weeks ago of turkeys strutting and gobbling and one pic of a gobbler breeding a hen. Since then the weather has been horrible. It's rained almost every day, windy and even snowed down to 600 feet yesterday. Now I am seeing big flocks of turkeys again. Yesterday I saw a flock of 60 to 70 birds and none of the gobblers were strutting. It was about 2 p.m., but if it would have been sunny they would have been all blowed up." Thanks, Joe! He's also posted some cool pics. Click here to take a look.
Up in Canada, Kevin Bartley posted some pics taken just a few days ago. Click here to check them out.
